A General Theory of Love

liffey
Yeah, I'm used to the heavy duty reading (I'm a PhD candidate in a very very very tangentially related field). I'll put it down and pick it back up again. Thanks for the encouragement. Mindsight is the book that has kept me going through this (horribly painful, often crazy-making) process.Read More...
Thank you, Cookie! Actually, I read the book after ending my own therapy with my quite wonderful therapist. I happened to just finish the book on the day that my daughter's therapist terminated her therapy. This book doesn't really deal with abrupt terminations like that, as it's about how to handle difficult terminations, how to terminate well, and so on. But after reading the book, I realized that I might have handled my last therapy session a little differently, for my benefit. I wish I'd...Read More...

Bipolar Disorder.

Draggers dear, I did read your message. Sorry, I should have given you a mention. I saw Askalot address me, so I addressed them back, and then it looked like you were being ignored. I didn't mean to ignore you though Askalot, You're welcome. I am not an expert either and that's the best I could do. There is a search box and advanced search options too, so you can search "OCD" and see what comes up for that. AmberRead More...

Hollow, I know being on the public bit of the board is hard so before you delete, I just wanted to say I'm happy to see you. I'm a follower of Captain Awkward too. She has helped me up my boundaries game considerably over the years. I had a really hard time figuring out what boundaries really were because it's not something that came naturally and I didn't really believe I had a right to them. I know what you mean about feeling as if you need to have some kind of external authority to quote.Read More...

Books on Attachment?

liffey
I've just finished reading a book called 'how to develop emotional health' by Oliver James, and I absolutely loved it. It is so concise and to the point with very real solutions and exercises. I wouldn't say it's specifically about attachment, but it touches on it a lot. AmberRead More...

Bad Childhood, Good Life

I was a captive audience to Schlessinger's radio program because of the place I worked. I will have to say I grew to dispise her for her lack of empathy for people who were hurting from deep mental illness. her thrust seemed to be "just get over it" and " just do what you're supposed to do in life". No empathy whatever for anyone who can't go out and make it big in the world like we're all expected to do. Moreover, her so-called "DR" title was for a degree in physical therapy and not...Read More...
Starlight, I paid the higher price and thought it was worth it! It's why I put this up when I saw the special. In the future, if I post another daily deal, I'll put in coffee talk also since it's time sensitive. BTW, if you're not familiar with Brene Brown, she has a great talk on TED which would give you a feel for whether you want to buy her book. Brene Brown on the Power of VulnerabilityRead More...

The Rape Recovery Handbook

Finding, I have a couple of suggestions that I've encountered in internships: 1. The Courage to Heal Workbook This was written specifically for survivors of CSA. Even so, it's been my experience that survivors of rape often have had trauma in childhood too, and I think many if not most or all of the exercises would be experienced as helpful for adult survivors of sexual assault. 1. The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook This is not specific to sexual abuse or assault. There are...Read More...

Helpful book

I buy and borrow a lot of books about psychotherapy. I'm interested in reading the book by Van der Kolk but am not much into physical concerns. Is it more about mental or is it more about the physical? The title is a bit confusing.Read More...
Had a great session with T, talking about the parts of the book I have read so far. I took in a copy of the passages that really hit home. He asked to read them, for he wanted to know what parts resonated with me...also, I think we stumbled upon something that has been tripping me up when doing EMDR. I think this is the stuck point that he was always referring to, which, at the time, I didn't know what he meant. Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD has become my new best friend. LJBRead More...

Hi Hollow, I wouldn't call them eloquent, but here's a couple of posts from my blog that might help. What I Learned in Therapy Lesson 4: It wasn’t my fault Learning developmental skills: Identifying and Expressing needs AGRead More...
Hi Jillann, I've read Kristin Neff's book... I did manage it all and have gone back to it and dipped in and out when I need the "be kind to yourself" message on repeat. But I found her personal stuff difficult to read (only because of my fertility issues) and I'm not sure I enjoyed it exactly or would recommend it particularly. I too found her through Brene Brown. AG - have just downloaded this to kindle. Sounds very interesting.... thanks for the recommendation. I'm not sure what it is...Read More...

The Language of Flowers

OK - I just finished reading this last weekend. I agree that it was an interesting read. All the attachment stuff was very thought provoking. However, I found the main characters self knowledge to be somehow too much. My father who grew up in foster care of the 1940's does not have that much self awareness of his own limitations. FWIW. It was a good read - very thought provoking. I want to get a flower dictionary now. Thanks for the reccomendation Liese JillannRead More...

I love novels. I have not read sense and sensibility in a long time. Might be time to go pull that one out and re-read it. I agree totally about the Hunger games! Another good on is Divergent. I have only read the first book and have not seen the movie. I kind of envy her being able to choose something other than what her family wanted her to. I wish I could take that courage right out of the book and just inject it!!Read More...
