I read a lot of books and I often find that I relate to them in one way or another and I can pick some things out of them that help me along the way. However, I rarely (if ever) have come across a book that I would call life changing, but if I had to name one, this is it!!

The author does an excellent job of pulling together every aspect of how trauma and just being human interact and the impact of self-criticism on the quality of life of the trauma survivor and the impact it can have on the ability to heal.

I have known for a long time that I am very self-critical and I have some really intensely protective parts that are the most critical of all, but every time I tried to stop and couldn't that failure was added to the pile of reasons why I was worthless.

My T has been trying (for a long time) to convey to me what is in this book and I kept getting stuck on the criticizing myself for being self critical and couldn't get myself or other parts past that block...until now. I finally understand what she has been trying to tell me.

A very easy read with many useful exercises to begin showing yourself compassion.

STRM.. I just ordered this book Wink

It will be here next week and I'l let you know what I think about it. I also struggle with the loud inner self-critic. And I have NO compassion for myself... maybe because I have never experienced that as a child... receiving compassion when hurting. And so now I cannot provide it for myself and if T tries to provide it... I simply cannot take it in.

I'll come back to discuss the book once I've read it. It sounds really interesting and helpful.

Thx

I've been reading the Brene Brown books, Daring Greatly, and the Gifts of Imperfection. She refers to Kritin Neff's book and research alot. I'm wondering what you all thought about this book. I'm going to be traveling for business next week and wanted to get a few books on my Ipad to read on the trip.

Is it worth buying? or more of a get it from the library when available type of book?
Jill...I have this book and could NOT get into it and did not finish it. Maybe I'm just not in the right place yet for all this self-compassion, you gotta love yourself kind of stuff, give yourself a hug thing. She also strikes me a kind of "hippy-ish" and I just could not relate to her at all.

I would carefully read the reviews on Amazon (I feel exactly like those who gave it one star) before buying it. It may be what you need and helpful for you, but I, honestly, did not like it at all.

Best,
TN

Jillann,
I would highly recommend a new book by Dr. Jeffrey Smith of the Moments of Change blog. It's available on Kindle for $10.00 and I know there's a free kindle app for the Ipad. The book is How We Heal and Grow: The Power of Facing Your Feelings.
I'll be writing a review of it for my blog, I read it on my recent vacation. One of the best books on healing I have ever read and well worth your time.

Hi Jillann,

I've read Kristin Neff's book... I did manage it all and have gone back to it and dipped in and out when I need the "be kind to yourself" message on repeat. But I found her personal stuff difficult to read (only because of my fertility issues) and I'm not sure I enjoyed it exactly or would recommend it particularly. I too found her through Brene Brown.

AG - have just downloaded this to kindle. Sounds very interesting.... thanks for the recommendation. I'm not sure what it is about my T going on holiday, but I often start looking for some theory reading to plug the gap (or pretend it's not my attachment to her that keeps me going every week ).

Not sure that's at all helpful!
