Hey Friends,

I am wondering if anyone has experience with this medication. I was put on it about 3 weeks ago when I was in a detox center. The Dr said it is good for nerve pain, anxiety, and a bunch of other things that don't really apply to me. What I am wondering about is it being addictive? Dr says it's not (obviously, or I would hope they would not put me on it in a detox center Confused), and internet research has mixed reviews. Problem is I already feel like I need a higher dose as I feel like it's not controlling my anxiety as well as it was. It's only been 3 weeks and it makes me nervous that it seems I am already building up a tolerance to it. I just got out of the detox center for highly abusing narcotic pain medication for Pete's sake I don't want to go backwards here! TIA

Kmay,

I am a detox nurse in the US. Gabapentin is commonly used in detox for use for opiate addictive patients for its mild to moderate pain relief, anxiety and to decrease the possibility of seizure from detox (although seizure is more common with benzodiazapine withdrawal. I haven't had any experience or clients that became addicted to it, but when going off the medication, the patient must slowly have the medication titrated downward. It is also commonly used as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder and migraine headache. Always check with doctor before titrating up or down.
Hi Ghost Girl,
Thank you! Yes, I was using opiates. I also have two torn discs in my back so it's been helping with the pain with that. It helps with my anxiety as well. I was also coming off of benzo's in the detox center as well. I was not abusing them, but was taking them at a higher dosage I guess and the longevity of taking them. They were not allowed at the detox center and I was fine with that anyway b/c I definately want to stay away from all addictive meds. Thank you so much for your help!
