I am a detox nurse in the US. Gabapentin is commonly used in detox for use for opiate addictive patients for its mild to moderate pain relief, anxiety and to decrease the possibility of seizure from detox (although seizure is more common with benzodiazapine withdrawal. I haven't had any experience or clients that became addicted to it, but when going off the medication, the patient must slowly have the medication titrated downward. It is also commonly used as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder and migraine headache. Always check with doctor before titrating up or down.
