The Giving Tree was one of the few books Boo was given at her birth. We started reading it together when she was two and I can't friggin' stand it for the same reason. I actually have no recollection of reading it as a kid...no surprise there, LOL. She went through a two month period of wanting to read it multiple times per day.
One of my favorites is a Dr. Suess book called "I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew". I remember not liking the ending, though, because I always wanted to actually get there (a mythical place where everything is perfect, and no one has troubles...or at least, very few Roll Eyes ). Reading it as an adult, now I see the reason for the ending (the main character decides to deal with their troubles directly instead of trying to escape them).

Other favorites:
"Runaway Bunny" (already discussed here)
"Love You Forever" (always makes me cry)
"Seven Silly Eaters" (about an exhausted mom with seven children, each who will only eat one type of food...in the end they make her a lovely birthday cake made from all their favorite foods...and along the way they learn to help with the chores so she's not so exhausted anymore...just a really fun story about appreciating what we have)
