Does anyone know about this kind of therapy? It is kind of a mindfulness based CBT. My therapist lent me his copy of "The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris to read over the Christmas break. I would love to hear anyone's opinions if they know about ACT or have read the book.

I'm off to Personal Stories to describe my session today.

Well, This is a long long long OLD response to this question but maybe it is still relevant.

I went through a ACT Intervention for people with chronic pain at the VA (im not a vet but it was open to anyone). It was EXCELLENT and I am the VERY cynical type. It is a type of mindfulness, well it involves mindfulness but it is more active and radical in the sense that you work on reaching what you actually WANT in life along with whatever it is that is going on. For me, it has helped me make better decisions about which treatments I will choose to try and which I won't be bothered to get entrapped with. It made SO much more sense to me than CBT (cognitive Behavioral Therapy) which has its benefits but somehow always had parts that just did NOT make sense to me!!! It was that paradoxical idea of always challenging thoughts and changing behaviors but these things can be continuous and it seemed like it was feasible to do in reality.. so this was more action oriented and just made me much happier.

I then did a online study where they sent us a book found at www.ACTforanxiety.com which gives a Really great overview there.

I have found it helpful because it has things you can remember easily and of course, like with most things, practice makes perfect.

It has some CBT components bit it isn't the traditional change your thoughts/behavior stuff.. it actually aims for here's your future.. what do you want to accomplish.. what steps need to happen... what are you dealing with that you are carry with you... and making amends with that if you will... not that you 'give in' to it or think i will no longer take treatment but not necessarily let it take over your life any longer.... if that makes sense...

So okay.. hope this helps abet very late.
