Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd share a short, warm, and funny story with you today... (if you're up for one)

I got home yesterday from a very intense session with my T. I felt quite shaken and drained and I was trying to calm myself down and feel more grounded. After getting home I went into the living room and sat at the end of the couch, which is situated next to our parrots cage. Our parrots name is Rita. I leaned forward, placed my elbows against my knees, and focused on clearing my mind. After about 30 seconds Rita said "What ya doing?" and then after 5 seconds of silence she said "Not much?" I told her "I'm resting Rita". I glance over and noticed she is on my side of the cage staring intently at me. I refocus on my breathing and another half minute goes by. Rita says "Do you like kisses papa?" I respond with half a grin on my face "Yes Rita, I like kisses". To which she replies "Kisses for papa!" and she makes kissing noises. I look over at her, now grinning ear to ear and see she has her beak pressed through the bars toward me. I lean over to her and give her a kiss on the beak. We both then leaned back slightly and I said to her softly "Thank you Rita". The power of pets never fails to amaze me Smiler

I hope you all have a great day!

Hi Everyone,

Draggers: Thank you for the welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed the story Smiler

SP: Thank you! She is a hoot at times.

Mallard: Thanks! I love her too. I'm glad your cat was a constant companion for you. I remember how soothing it was for me to have a cat purring on my lap.

MsC: Rita is one of the few shining lights in a world that's often dark for me. I think it would be fantastic if you got a puppy! Something to cuddle with can be so soothing for the soul. As for parrots, some are "noisier" than others. Rita has her moments, lol, but she quickly settles down in the evening and gets quiet. One of the wonderful aspects of pets is that they are non-judgmental and provide unconditional love and companionship Smiler

I hope everyone has a great evening...

Hi Draggers,

Rita is an African Grey. These birds learn to talk on their own simply by being exposed to it. It usually takes them 6-12 months to start talking. And once they start look out ...lol. Previous to getting Rita I always thought that she would just mimic what she hears. But after some research, and through personal experience, I've learned that over time they are able to take words from different phrases that they've learned and reconstruct them into coherent sentences. Which is actually creepy at times!

If your interested in learning more I would encourage you to Google Dr Irene Pepperberg. She has been doing research with African Greys for several decades now and has demonstrated their intelligence. Despite having a brain the size of a shelled walnut their intelligence and cognitive ability has been compared with primates, dolphins, and even toddlers.

that's a really great story, LR. thanks for sharing!

a neighbor of mine had a parrot, and he would ride his bike around the neighborhood with his parrot on his handlebars! it was the neatest thing to see!

yes, there's nothing like animal sense. they do seem to know when things aren't going so great for their people, and they intuitively know how to gently bring you out.

I'm happy you have Rita, and Rita has you

P.S. welcome to the forum! Smiler
